SEN

The definitions of special educational needs (SEN) can be found in section 20 of the Children and Families Act 2014.
A child or young person has SEN if they have additional needs which call for special educational provision to be made for them.
This is if he or she:
• has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others the same age or
• has a disability that prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.

At Prime 8 Education, we fully committed to the provision of equal educational opportunity for all pupils. We strive to create an inclusive atmosphere, with a sense of community and belonging and believe that every child has an entitlement to personal, emotional, social and intellectual development and must be given the opportunity to achieve his/her potential in learning. Every child is unique in terms of characteristics, interests, abilities, motivation and learning needs.

Our high-quality provision means that our
amazing children can achieve amazing things!

We work in line with the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice.
This means we will -
• Identify the needs of our pupils with SEN as soon as possible.
• Monitor the progress of all pupils in order to ensure that they are able to reach their full potential.
• Make appropriate provision to overcome all barriers to learning
• Work with parents to gain a better understanding of their child, and involve them in all stages of their child’s education
• Liaise with referrers and other professionals involved with the child
• Refer pupils for EHCP assessments if needed

Our staff are experienced in working with the Local Authority around the EHCP process. We can support with Applications for EHCP Assessments, Next Steps Meetings and Development and Review of EHC Plans.

Pupils are given a strong voice and able to say what kind of support they feel they would like. They are given regular opportunities to express their views and share ideas about ways in which their needs could be met within the context of Prime 8.

We recognise that some children have extra emotional and social needs that need to be developed and nurtured. These needs can manifest themselves in a number of ways, including behavioural difficulties, anxiousness, and being uncommunicative. Our PSD and Mindfulness sessions aim to support the overall wellbeing of all children and an awareness of the difficulties experienced by some. All our children and young people have the opportunity to develop strong relationships with our small staff team and to build self-esteem.

Young people from Schools and Academies in the surrounding area with more complex needs are taught in the Community on a 1:1 basis initially.
Transition to Prime 8 group base is gradually introduced when Learners are ready for the next step.

We have worked with a large number of schools within the local area including St Giles School and Aegir Specialist Academy.

Prime8 Education is not the sole educational provider for the young people who attend our setting.
